Accidents can happen anywhere anytime. It\u2019s hard to predict when they\u2019ll happen but it\u2019s possible to be prepared for them to the best of our abilities. Our Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) fosters a safety-conscious environment in the workplace with thorough training programs for worker\u2019s safety. But despite training, you may forget the basic rules of first aid when it times to put your learning into practice. Here\u2019s a reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintain your Composure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether it be after a fire explosion or an electrical accident, you need first aid experts to treat and save the victims on the spot. But often, when the people are in bad shape, the sight can be deeply upsetting. It can impair your ability to function or stay in close proximity to the site of the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you\u2019re the only expert available who knows how to perform first aid, it\u2019s your job to maintain your composure and stay calm<\/u><\/a>. Your goal should be to focus on your patient and offer the best care possible. The approach should be objective rather than emotive so that you don\u2019t give in to any weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prioritize your Own Safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If there has been a fire breakout and there are people stuck inside, it\u2019s not your job to go in to save them. You\u2019re putting yourself at risk that way and only increasing the count of casualties. Arrange help and call professionally trained firefighters to retrieve the people. But don\u2019t be tempted to jump into the fire before it\u2019s extinguished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check the Vitals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing to do is check their vitals. Take their pulse count. Check their breathing. If they\u2019re unconscious, open their eyelids and examine their pupils. Feel their body temperature and alert medical authorities if it\u2019s unusually warm or cold. Record all these readings and report to the medical experts when they take the patients under their care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanitize Yourself Before Examining the Patient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019ll have disposable gloves available on site but if you have them, put them on before examining the patient. If not, wash your hands as best as you can. Sanitize them with a disinfectant if the patient has open wounds because those can get infected. But if there has been blood loss and you need something to close the open wound, use any fairly clean cloth available and tie it on the wound firmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Update your First Aid Kit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Never use expired medicines<\/u><\/a> on your patients. Make sure your first aid box is updated every few months so that you have a fresh supply of products and everything else you\u2019ll need in it. Discard empty wrappers or blunt scissors. Don\u2019t overfill your first aid; that might delay you in finding the thing you need in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
