A fire is a mishap waiting to happen. A matchstick and red strip aren’t the only things that can start a fire. All it needs is a little ignition, some fuel, and oxygen to help spread the fire. This deadly trifecta can work together to spark a fire that can quickly become hazardous.
This blog lists some objects that can quickly start and fuel a raging fire at the workplace.
1. Overheated Equipment
An overused printer or overheated IT equipment can either explode or catch fire. Moreover, if there’s no ventilation in the area or if space is covered with a lot of dry stuff (think: paper, cardboard), it can quickly blow up into a raging fire.
2. Electrical Faults
Frayed or worn-out electrical wires and outdated equipment can heat up and ignite a fire. These worn-out devices should be used with caution and replaced at the right time.
3. Heaters
Heaters can make an otherwise cold workspace warm and cozy. However, if portable heaters are placed near fabricated furniture, combustibles, or flammable liquids, they can spark a deadly fire. Employees should keep their heaters at least a few feet away from combustibles and not in enclosed spaces.
4. Overloaded Electric Outlets
Most of us are guilty of overloading an electric outlet that’s charging phones, supporting IT equipment, and even connected to the printer. These overloaded outlets carry large amounts of electricity, can cause the wiring to overheat and catch fire. Users should switch in two plugs at max and not try to overload an electrical outlet.
5. Combustible Clutter
Combustible clutter such as paper or cardboard can’t start a fire on its own, but it can surely add fuel to it. These dried-up combustibles burn quickly and very efficiently. Try to shred papers and documents, get them off-site, and recycle them regularly.
6. Smoking
Smoking cigarettes at the workplace can spell disaster for everyone.
Embers from cigarette butts can start up hazardous fires. If these embers manage to come into contact with paper waste, or other combustible materials, they can quickly turn into flames. Smokers should always limit smoking to outdoor spaces to minimize its dangers.
7. Unattended Candles
While some people might find scented candles relaxing, candles should never be left unattended, especially in a workplace, where there are paper and dry materials available to catch fire. Always try to blow out a candle and never leave it unattended.
8. Faulty Electrical Wiring
Loose or old wiring can cause sparks, which can ultimately transform into a fire. This is why you should have qualified professionals routinely inspect any loose or worn-out wiring. This wiring can be changed in time and save lives and other valuable resources.
