A fire watch is a trained person assigned to watch for fire during and after hot work such as welding, cutting, grinding or brazing in areas where a spark could ignite combustible materials. Fire watch training teaches that person to assess hot work hazards, monitor the area continuously, keep the right fire watch equipment ready, use an extinguisher, and stay on watch for at least 30 to 60 minutes after the work stops. In Saudi Arabia a fire watch is a standard requirement on any hot work permit, especially on Aramco and GCC industrial sites.
What Is a Fire Watch?
By definition, a fire watch is a dedicated safety role one person whose only job is to watch for fire while hot work is carried out, and for a set period afterwards. Unlike general fire safety, fire watch safety is focused entirely on hot work: the sparks, slag and heat from welding and cutting that can smoulder unseen for a long time before bursting into flame. The fire watcher does no other task and never leaves the area until the risk has passed.

Fire Watch Responsibilities
The fire watch responsibilities run from before the work starts to well after it finishes. Before hot work begins, the fire watcher checks the permit, confirms combustibles are removed or protected, and makes sure the correct extinguisher and fire barriers are in place. During the work they keep constant watch on the sparks and their landing zones never leaving, never distracted ready to raise the alarm and attack a small fire immediately. After the work stops, the watcher stays on a cool-down watch for at least 30 to 60 minutes, checking for hidden smouldering and hot spots before signing the area off as safe.
Hot Work & When a Fire Watch Is Required
Hot work is any activity that produces heat, sparks or flame welding, cutting, grinding, brazing and torch work. A fire watch is required whenever hot work is done near combustible materials, in confined or elevated areas, or wherever a hot work permit calls for one. On Aramco and GCC sites, the hot work permit system makes a trained fire watch mandatory, and the watch must continue for the required cool-down period after the tools are switched off.
