A floorhand on his second hitch notices that the mud returns look heavier than they should, and the flow hasn’t slowed after the pumps stopped. He tells the driller straight away. The well is shut in within a minute, and a routine kick stays routine. Spotting that kind of early warning is what the IADC WellSharp Introductory course teaches, and it’s why drilling contractors send new crew here first.

Future Institute for Advanced Professional Training runs IADC WellSharp approved programs. 99% of our Introductory trainees pass the IADC knowledge test at the first attempt, taught by instructors who have years of rig floor experience between them.

Classes run at our Al Khobar centre, and we also deliver on site for drilling contractors across the Kingdom. A whole crew can complete the course in two days between rotations, without anyone travelling far from camp.

IADC WellSharp Introductory

IADC WellSharp Introductory Course Overview

The IADC WellSharp Introductory course is a two day well control course for people new to drilling. It covers how primary well control is maintained, how to recognize a kick, and what each crew member does when the well is shut in.

Also known as WellSharp Drilling Operations Introductory, this course sits at Level 2 in the IOGP 476 well control framework. It’s the first step in the IADC WellSharp pathway and lays the foundation for the Driller and Supervisor levels. The course ends with a written IADC knowledge test. There’s no simulator assessment at this level.

What You Will Be Able to Do After the Course

  • Explain hydrostatic, formation and bottomhole pressure, and why balance matters
  • Work out basic pit volumes, pipe displacement and annular capacity
  • Name the most common causes of kicks on a drilling rig
  • Recognize abnormal pressure warning signs from mud, cuttings and drilling data
  • Spot a kick from pit gain, flow with the pumps off, or incorrect hole fill
  • Describe the surface shut-in sequence and your role during it
  • Read and fill in a basic kill sheet
  • Take part confidently in pit drills, trip drills and diverter drills
