Your trainer learns how hydrogen sulfide behaves, how to use a gas detector, and how to don and operate SCBA safely, along with how to plan, deliver, and assess a training session. The course is accredited under the IADC Drilling Industry Training scheme, recognised across the oil and gas industry. It suits HSE staff, safety officers, and experienced crew being developed into certified in house trainers.

What Is H2S and SCBA Train the Trainer?

H2S and SCBA train the trainer is a course that certifies an experienced person to teach hydrogen sulfide safety and breathing apparatus use to others. It combines two things: solid knowledge of H2S hazards and SCBA operation, and the practical teaching skills to pass them on, such as running a hands on drill and assessing a learner’s readiness.

Once certified, your trainer can deliver this training inside your company whenever a new crew member needs it.

The course is built around eight modules, moving from H2S knowledge to full SCBA competence and how to teach it.

Module 7 covers the following topics:

What a materials handling hazard is · the types · protecting yourself when lifting and moving loads · employer responsibilities.

Understanding what H2S is, how it smells, and why that smell cannot be trusted at high concentrations. This module covers the health effects of exposure, safe concentration limits, and where H2S is commonly found on oil and gas sites.

Getting to know personal and fixed gas detectors, how to read them, and how to respond to an alarm. This module covers calibration and bump testing, so your trainer knows a detector is working correctly before anyone relies on it.

Learning the parts of a self contained breathing apparatus, including the facepiece, regulator, air cylinder, and harness. This module also covers who needs fit testing and a medical evaluation before using SCBA, and the different types of breathing apparatus available.

Hands on practice putting on SCBA correctly, checking the seal, and confirming the equipment is working through a positive and negative pressure check. This module also covers what to do if the equipment fails or the air supply runs low.

Building an emergency action plan, running an evacuation, and coordinating a rescue if someone is overcome by gas. This module covers the buddy system and clear communication, so a response stays organised under pressure.

Understanding what a company needs to run a proper breathing protection programme, including medical checks, fit testing, ongoing training, and keeping accurate records.

Safe work practices around gas testing, ventilation, and permits, along with the protective equipment and emergency stations, such as safety showers and eyewash points, that should be in place before work begins.

Cleaning, inspecting, and storing SCBA correctly, and testing that breathing air stays safe to use. This final module also covers how to bring all eight areas together into a training session others can learn from and pass.

This course suits HSE officers, safety supervisors, and experienced drilling or rig crew who will train others in H2S and SCBA use. It is ideal for companies operating on sour gas sites that need trained instructors ready on demand, rather than relying on an outside provider for every batch of new staff.

This course is delivered under our IADC Drilling Industry Training accreditation, recognised across the oil and gas industry in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf. Your certified trainer holds a qualification that contractors and auditors trust. We also offer this course under our own Future Institute accreditation, so you can choose the certification that best fits your company.

Duration and Delivery

The course typically runs over two to three days, combining theory with hands on gas detector and SCBA practice and a final teaching assessment. Training is delivered at our institute or on site, so your trainer practises with the same equipment they will teach with.

Certification

Learners are assessed on their H2S and SCBA knowledge and their ability to deliver a training session, through a theory assessment and a practical teaching exercise. On passing, you receive an IADC DIT accredited Train the Trainer certificate with a QR verifiable card.
